What is Interact?

The Interact Club at North Plainfield High School is the youth-based service club of Rotary. Those of you familiar with the Kiwanis clubs may know of Key Club, the Kiwanis youth service club.

In fact, Key Club was very active at NPHS for many years, until the local Kiwanis Club folded. To help fill the void created by the demise of the local Kiwanis, our club stepped in and introduced Interact to the administration and students at NPHS.

Our first Interact Club advisor was Amy Six, who helped organize the Interactors and got them involved in local service projects. Following Amy, our current advisor is Alexandra Pereira, who is on her second year with Interact.

The Interact Club not only initiates and carries out its own service projects, but it also helps the Rotary Club with some of our work. For example, the students come out to help at the concession stand at Rutgers' basketball games (see post below), help us with our annual Track and Field Meet for middle school students, and many other activities.

In a future post, we'll share the Interact Club's report on activities for the last school year.

We're Going to Rutgers!

The Rotary Club of Plainfield-North Plainfield will once again work the concession stands at eight to ten Rutgers' basketball games this season.

A total of 20 to 30 workers are needed to staff the concession stand, selling hot dogs, hamburgers, soft drinks and snacks to hungry basketball fans. We set up the stand, sell, and then clean up before we leave.

We are compensated by Rutgers for our work. We receive 15% of the gross receipts from the concession stand, and we use that money for our Scholarship Program. (Each year we present $3,000 in scholarships to both Plainfield High School and North Plainfield High School seniors.)

We do not yet have our schedule of games, but should have them soon. If you would like to help out at any of the games, drop an email to RotaryPNP@verizon.net and we will get back to you with details.

Dinner provided at YMCA shelter

Members of the Club recently supplied and served dinner to residents and shelter guests at the Plainfield YMCA.
The dinner of fried chicken, potatoes, gravy, vegetable, and dessert was provided by KFC in North Plainfield through the generosity of Percy Fennel. In addition, club members brought salad and soft drinks.
Almost forty people were served dinner by Rotarians Mary Forbes, Marilyn Birnbaum, and Beverly Howard.
The Club has worked with the Y for the past three years to help provide various nutritious meals for the shelter guests and for residents.

Dictionary Project

For the past four years, our Club has given a free dictionary to every third grade student in Plainfield and in North Plainfield schools. This is one of our primary, community and youth service projects in our two communities.

Members of the Club visit each third grade classroom, usually accompanied by management staff from the school. The members explain about service, engaging the students in a discussion of service opportunities that they currently enjoy. The Rotarians then explain how our club functions, how we work to serve our local and international communities. Each student is then presented with his/her own, personal dictionary.

Over the past four years, we have distributed over 3,500 dictionaries to deserving and grateful students. Our next distribution will take place in October, and we welcome your participation. Contact us by email at Secretary@RotaryPNP.org.
